Instacart launches Clementine, an AI grocery shopping assistant

Instacart is the latest delivery app to bake a conversational AI assistant into its platform. The company announced Wednesday that it is launching Clementine, an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant that can turn a conversation, grocery list, or recipe into a ready-to-buy cart. Clementine is now available in the U.S. and Canada.

Clementine lets users decide what to make for dinner, simplify grocery shopping, and stay on budget, Instacart says. Users can ask the assistant queries such as "I need a week of budget-friendly kids' lunches," "high-protein, easy dinners for two," or "order my usuals." The assistant can generate personalized recipes or surface ones from trusted publishers, and it tailors recommendations to each household's preferences, including dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options.

The assistant also surfaces relevant deals and promotions while suggesting lower-cost alternatives. Users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one, and Clementine will turn it into a cart.

"Every night, millions of families ask the same question: 'What's for dinner?' Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve," said Chris Rogers, Instacart's CEO, in an emailed press release. "We've spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work."

Instacart is not the only delivery app moving in this direction. Uber Eats and DoorDash have both introduced similar AI assistants that turn natural-language requests and grocery lists into personalized carts. The launches signal that delivery apps no longer want to be only places where people find and buy groceries, but also where they make decisions before a purchase.

These platforms are now competing not just on delivery speed and variety but on becoming the default planning tool for households when it comes to grocery shopping. They are also looking to keep users inside their own apps for grocery and meal planning rather than having them turn to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

The launch reflects a broader pattern of consumer apps embedding conversational AI into their core experiences. What remains to be seen is how Clementine performs against rival assistants from Uber Eats and DoorDash, and whether Instacart's roughly 15 years of shopping data gives it an edge in personalization and accuracy.

Why it matters

Instacart's Clementine marks the delivery-app race shifting from fulfillment to AI-driven meal and grocery planning, competing with Uber Eats, DoorDash, and general-purpose chatbots for the household's pre-purchase decisions.
