Solo dev releases Jenny, a free MIT-licensed local LLM desktop app

A solo developer released Jenny, a free, MIT-licensed Electron desktop app for running local LLMs with tool calling, rollback, and an IDE, after more than a year of nights-and-weekends work. The developer, who posted to r/LocalLLaMA and describes the project as a second job, said they built it out of concern that frontier LLM use is subsidized by private equity and venture capital that will eventually dry up, leaving the tools "enshitified." Jenny is designed to host local LLMs privately and make that easy and seamless for users.

The developer is not a professional software engineer and called the project a solo effort that went through many "vibecoded" iterations over roughly 1.5 years before landing on the native Electron app. They acknowledged existing rivals including Unsloth Desktop, LM Studio, and Open WebUI, but said they hope people enjoy what Jenny offers. The release is the latest in a crowded field of local-model harnesses, and the developer said they plan to continue maintaining the project.
